Recreation Department Programs
The Wakefield Recreation Department offers a multitude of summer programs to get you and your family outdoors. From adult fitness classes to summer enrichment and sports programs, there is something for everyone.
Pickleball
Join the fastest-growing sport in America by learning pickleball. Play indoors at the Americal Civic Center, where you will find three indoor courts. A $5 drop-in fee is required to play. You can reserve the courts in advance.
Outdoor pickleball courts are available at McKenna Courts at Veterans Field, located behind the softball diamond and overlooking Lake Quannapowitt. These courts are public, with free reservations for residents and a $20/hour fee for non-residents. If you are new to pickleball and are looking to learn the fundamentals, consider signing up for lessons this summer through the Wakefield Recreation Department’s Adult Pickleball Lessons. For pickleball skills lessons, pro-play sessions, and strategy lessons, consider enrolling in Viking Pickleball Summer Clinics with Sarah Saari, a Certified Pickleball Instructor and 5.0+ USA-rated pickleball player.

Festival By The Lake
Lower Common
Held at Lower Common Park, The Festival By The Lake is a 30-year tradition featuring handmade, one-of-a-kind arts and crafts. The Wakefield Center Neighborhood Association organizes the Festival as a fundraiser for its many community projects. It provides live music, a high-quality craft fair, and a variety of affordable food options, ranging from healthy wraps to festival favorites like kettle corn. Many of the booths are sponsored by non-profit organizations willing to share their information and services with you. It’s a great way to learn more about Wakefield’s vibrant groups.
Families can enjoy a nearby playground, train rides, face painting, and live street art, while also connecting with local non-profits. All proceeds directly support Wakefield town improvement projects and community events.
