From Startup to Scale-up: Leveraging the Project: Pop-Up Incubator in Wakefield

For a new business concept, the journey from the spark of a great idea to a thriving business venture often begins with a critical first step: testing the market without the heavy commitment of a long-term lease. That’s the power of the pop-up model!
Pop-ups offer a strategic opportunity for entrepreneurs to cost-effectively build their brand, gather direct customer feedback, and assess the viability of their concept. In Wakefield, Project: Pop Up is leveraging this advantage to provide newly aspiring business owners with a low-risk, high-impact incubator to gain real-world experience, engage the community, and ultimately lay the foundation for a successful, permanent presence.
Let’s take a closer look at Wakefield’s innovative Project: Pop-Up and how it may be the ideal opportunity to get your business off the ground.
Wakefield’s Project: Pop-Up
Project: Pop-Up in Wakefield is a publicly funded initiative supported by American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds through the Town of Wakefield’s Economic Development Council and Community & Economic Development Department. It’s designed to revitalize under-utilized storefronts and commercial hubs by providing local entrepreneurs with subsidized, short-term retail space to test market concepts. With financial and professional support, Project: Pop-Up offers retailers, designers, artists, and food purveyors a chance to test their concepts in brick-and-mortar settings.
Project: Pop-Up in Wakefield officially launched its first season on October 1, 2025, at 243 North Avenue. The current brands popping up include Cotton and Blue, founded by Linda Callanan, which creates one-of-a-kind pieces made from upcycled fabrics and Forager Fabrics, founded by Sara Bushway, which offers sustainable and secondhand textiles. Together, these two brands share a commitment to reimagining materials that already exist, giving them new life through thoughtful design and reuse. This latest round of pop-ups builds on the success of the program’s initial launch in October 2025, which featured local entrepreneurs including Wicks Please, Secret Stash Sweets, and Oolie Boolie Baubles.
The 600 sq. ft. incubator space at 243 North Avenue offers resources, marketing support, and opportunities for makers and artists. Shoppers may recognize the brands as Wakefield-based, and their products are often found at local craft fairs and markets.
The second Project: Pop-Up location, Creative Chaos Emporium, a longer-term pop up opened on January 24, 2026 and will remain until September 2026. It is located next door at 239 North Avenue and will remain until the end of September 2026. This strategic space is in a popular business district directly across from the train station, providing excellent visibility and easy access to I-95, public transportation, and downtown Wakefield. It also conveniently connects to the neighboring pop-up at 243 North Avenue. Brands can secure this high-traffic spot for 2-3 months at a subsidized rate, complete with a suite of essential resources designed to seed their success.

This robust support includes marketing, public relations, and social media assistance, as well as rent stipends, resource guides, and expert guidance. Additionally, most brands receive event and signage stipends, flexible-use fixtures, and buildout support.
